Canadian Armed Forces reservists were hoping last weekend to learn how to provide assistance to communities during an earthquake.

Military equipment, vehicles and 108 soldiers from the Vancouver-based 39th Canadian Brigade Group could be seen throughout the community, Feb. 20-22, at Exercise Cougar Ready 26 — a multi-day coordinated training exercise in which soldiers were responding to a simulated 6.2 magnitude earthquake.

Lieutenant Colonel John Fortoloski told The Hope Standard that training like this is important to ensure soldiers are ready to help Canadians no matter the circumstances.

“Exercises like this test the ability to deploy and operate during emergency situations,” said Fortoloczky, who is also HOPE’s chief administrative officer. “Like any organization, there is change. There is change in personnel, there is change in equipment and updates in process technologies. So you have to stay current and make sure what you are using and how you are using it is right for the mission.”

Fortoloczky explained that the exercise involved the Canadian Armed Forces working with Hope RCMP and assisting local and provincial teams in order to enhance emergency preparedness. This included Hope Region, Fraser Health, Shoathil First Nation and BC Health Emergency Management

Throughout the weekend, Soldiers’ training included preparing sandbags, establishing radio communications, establishing emergency operations centers, surveying areas, planning for simulated damage-affected infrastructure, setting up temporary warehouses for supplies, planning a field hospital, deploying water filtration units, and establishing satellite communications links with provincial and federal authorities.

Emergency operations centers have been set up at District Hall, Choathel and Fraser Canyon Hospital. Teams were sent to each of the centers to form communications and report to the Soldiers’ community base set up in the Hope Recreation Center meeting room.

Radio towers were also temporarily built behind the recreation center and on Thacker Mountain.

Many soldiers have civilian jobs and need to take time off for specialized training, Fortolochki said.
