A 5.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded south of Puerto Armuelles

Panama City, Panama: The Institute of Geosciences at the University of Panama reported a 5.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred on February 24 at 3:38 p.m. local time. The depth of the earthquake was 19 kilometers, and it was located in the border area between Panama and Costa Rica, 5 kilometers south of Puerto Armuelles. According to the initial report, the earthquake was felt in several nearby towns, although no material damage or casualties have been reported so far.

Local authorities are monitoring the area for possible aftershocks. Minutes later, the institute recorded a 3.4-magnitude aftershock at 3:45 p.m., at a depth of 15 kilometers, located 7 kilometers southeast of Puerto Armuelles. This second earthquake reinforces the authorities’ recommendation to remain attentive to updates on seismic activity in the region. Later, two more aftershocks were recorded. The authorities conducted surveillance, but no injuries or damage were reported.

Minutes later, at 3:45:04 p.m., a second earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 and a depth of 15 kilometers was detected, located 7 kilometers southeast of the same area.
