Residents and tourists on the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria have been urged to remain calm after thousands of people on both islands were hit by a 4.1 magnitude earthquake.

Scientists confirmed that the matter is not related to the seismic activity that was recorded under Mount Teide during the past two weeks, and they confirmed that a volcanic eruption is not imminent.

Authorities admit that many people were disturbed by the quake and wondered whether it was linked to unusual seismic movements beneath Teide, but officials moved quickly to reassure the public that there was no such link.

“In 1989, in the same area, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded and felt all over the island of Tenerife,” said Rubén Lopez, a volcanologist at IGN, who separated this quake from recent aftershocks in earthquakes in the Cañadas del Teide region.

The quake occurred at 12.26pm today at a depth of ten kilometres, with residents reporting rooms shaking and furniture shaking in the aftermath. The epicenter of the earthquake was not under Mount Teide, but in the Enmedio volcano, located between Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

The National Geographic Institute confirmed that the magnitude of the earthquake reached 4.1 in the Enmedio volcano area in the channel that separates the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Where the earthquake struck

The tremor was widely felt in different parts of both islands, and given its size and the depth of its epicenter, this resulted in a large number of reports from residents clearly feeling movement. In municipalities such as Areco in Tenerife, witnesses reported shaking that lasted about five seconds, with some saying “the whole room was shaking” when the quake struck.

“It took about ten seconds and was more noticeable than ever before, as it moved the entire house,” recalls a resident of Agaete in Gran Canaria. “It went from less to more. At first it looked like a door closing, but then the whole house moved.”

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has documented cities where earthquakes were recorded at different levels of intensity. The earthquake not only affected Tenerife, but also affected multiple locations across Gran Canaria, being detected in more than 100 population centers spanning the two main islands.

Among these locations are several popular tourist destinations including Los Cristianos in Tenerife and Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. The authorities confirmed that no material damage or major injuries were recorded.

The Institute of Volcanology of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN) confirmed that “this earthquake has absolutely no relation” to the volcanic earthquake recorded in Tenerife in recent weeks.

Enmedio Vulcan Zone The area ranks among the most seismically active in the Canary Islands, as it lies above the underwater fault line that runs between the two capital islands.

While tremors occur regularly at this location, earthquakes exceeding magnitude 4 usually trigger extreme alarm among local residents, as they are clearly felt inside homes.

Experts are meeting again tomorrow to further analyze thousands of tremors detected under Mount Teide in Tenerife.

They confirm that a volcanic eruption is not possible in the near or medium future, because the warning signs will be noticeably different. However, they are urging all Tenerife councils to update their emergency protocols, pointing to places like Iceland where locals are well-versed in eruption response procedures.

The Tenerife administration confirms that the island has the most advanced and comprehensive surveillance infrastructure available, and stresses that there is absolutely no reason for public concern.
