How often does South Carolina suffer from earthquakes? Colombia shook by 3.0
Watch the dramatic moment the earthquake topples the historic church bell tower
A deadly earthquake has caused tremors across Cebu province in the Philippines. A video clip showed the moment the church bell tower collapsed during the earthquake.
South Carolina is the most earthquake-prone state on the East Coast, typically recording 10 to 15 earthquakes per year. The recent 3.0 magnitude earthquake near Columbia was the strongest earthquake recorded in the state this year. The state experiences a higher-than-average frequency of earthquakes due to active “swarms” along ancient fault lines. The most important event in the state’s history was the 1886 Charleston earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.3.
South Carolina is the most earthquake-prone state on the East Coast, according to the South Carolina Division of Emergency Management.
Approximately 10 to 15 earthquakes are recorded annually in South Carolina, three to five of which are usually felt or observed by people. About 70% of South Carolina’s earthquakes occur in the Middleton Place-Summerville seismic zone.
The latest earthquake occurred Thursday, February 26, at 12:17 p.m. near Columbia, according to SC Department of Natural Resources Geological Survey data.
These events, caused by severe and sudden earthquakes, highlight the seismic activity occurring in the region.
How big was the SC earthquake on Thursday, February 26?
Initially reported as 2.5, it was upgraded to 3.0, making it the strongest earthquake recorded in the state this year.
The epicenter was near the east side of Lake Murray, affecting areas near Irmo, Lexington and Columbia.
Area residents reported hearing a loud noise and feeling shaking. While this was the fourth earthquake in the Columbia area in just two weeks, no major damage was reported, according to the SCDNR.
This followed three smaller earthquakes in the same corner of Lake Murray, including a magnitude 2.8 on February 13, a magnitude 1.9 on February 15, and a magnitude 1.8 on February 16.
Experts from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources say that although this activity is frequent, these events are usually minor and short-lived and are not considered a precursor to a “major” event.
How many earthquakes has South Carolina experienced in 2026 so far?
As of February 27, South Carolina has recorded at least 12 earthquakes in 2026.
Why does South Carolina experience frequent earthquakes?
As a result of these frequent tremors, some people in the Palmetto State have expressed concern that earthquakes are becoming more common.
Based on SCDNR Geological Survey data, South Carolina is currently experiencing an above-average frequency of earthquakes, due to active “swarms” of small tremors clustered in specific areas.
While the average number of earthquakes recorded in the state ranges from 10 to 15 earthquakes per year, recent years have seen a marked increase, with 30 earthquakes in 2024 and more than 20 in 2025.
South Carolina earthquakes occur within the interior of the North American tectonic plate.
The state’s crust contains ancient fault lines, geological structures formed hundreds of millions of years ago during mountain building and continental rifting. Many of these faults are buried beneath sediment and are not visible on the surface, according to the South Carolina Department of Emergency Management.
Stress builds up slowly in the Earth’s crust over long periods due to tectonic forces. When this pressure is released along these ancient faults, rocks break and move, causing earthquakes.
When was the largest earthquake in South Carolina history?
While the recent spike in seismic activity has raised concerns, it is important to remember that South Carolina has a long history of earthquakes.
Based on SCEMD data, the most significant event occurred in 1886 with the Charleston and Somerville earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.3 and resulted in 60 deaths and damage estimated at $5-6 million. This earthquake was felt across 2.5 million square miles, indicating the potential for large seismic events in the region.
Another notable earthquake in South Carolina’s history was the 1913 Union County earthquake. Its magnitude was estimated at 4.3 and was felt over an area of approximately 43,000 square miles.
The event affected the western part of South Carolina, adjacent parts of Georgia and North Carolina, and was felt as far away as Virginia, causing structural damage in the region.
Earthquake preparedness and safety measures
Earthquakes in South Carolina can cause large, sudden losses because destruction can occur in minutes.
SCEMD suggests people take precautionary steps to reduce risks by securing heavy furniture to walls, propping up chimneys, and preparing a 3-day emergency kit.
During an earthquake, it is also necessary to follow the “drop, cover and wait” protocol to protect yourself from falling debris.
