A 3.2 magnitude earthquake has been reported outside Detroit Beach in Monroe County

Monroe County, Michigan (Fox 2) – The United States Geological Survey reported a 3.23 earthquake in southeast Michigan Friday night.

The United States Geological Survey reported that this happened at around 6:55 PM EST outside Detroit Beach, which is located in Monroe County about 40 miles south of Detroit. The United States Geological Survey initially announced that it had a magnitude of 3.4.

A loud roar, an alleged plane crash has been reported alongside an earthquake in Monroe County

A 3.2-magnitude earthquake was reported Friday night in Monroe County, with many reporting that they heard a loud boom just before that and others thought they had seen a plane crash.

FOX 2 received many calls and emails from viewers saying they had felt tremors, some of them big enough to rock the house. No injuries or major damage were reported.

Reports received by the US Geological Survey say the effects were being felt as far north as the British Pound Highlands and as far south as Bowling Green, Ohio.

Some people have reported hearing a loud boom before they even felt the vibration. Talk of a plane crash spread in the area just as quickly as news of the earthquake. Someone told us that they saw smoke on the water.

“People all over the country, even all the way to the subway airport, heard the boom, whatever it was. Someone saw what we thought was a seaplane doing some touches, and we believed what they saw, and what they saw,” said Lt. Ron Hoskins of the town’s fire department Frenchtown: “It was smoke, it was actually mist from the seaplane touching the water.”

Coast Guard fire department rescue boats searched the water for more than an hour but found nothing.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in Michigan. In fact, it’s an event that occurs roughly every five years.

The last one was in 2015 with a force of 4.2 degrees. The largest that was ever recorded in Michigan was in 1947 with a force of 4.6.

So how do these earthquakes happen here in Michigan? We are not on any major plate tectonics, but there are smaller fault lines running around the state. And when there is movement in these fault lines it can cause an earthquake, although it is usually very small as we have experienced.
