An earthquake swarm shakes central Nevada near Tonopah along a newly identified fault

A cluster of earthquakes has struck a remote area of ​​central Nevada near Tonopah, including a 4.0 magnitude quake that struck near Warm Springs on Tuesday morning.

Seismologists said this activity is typical for Nevada, where clusters of earthquakes can erupt in a concentrated area. “This is an earthquake sequence similar to the Nevada earthquake,” said Christy Rowe, director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory. “We have a lot of these earthquakes where we see a slight increase in activity in a particular place.”

The quakes occur along a fault that runs along the southern edge of the Monitor and Antelope ranges, and was previously unknown to scientists, Rowe said. “We didn’t know this fault existed,” Rowe said. “It’s a new fault for us – not for Earth, of course – but it was not known before.”

For now, earthquakes have remained moderate. Rowe said the lab will not deploy additional temporary sensors unless activity increases to about 5 degrees or more.

Seismologists said they are continuing to monitor the swarm closely while Nevada works to bring the ShakeAlert early warning system to the state. The software, already active in neighboring countries, can send mobile phone alerts seconds before the vibration arrives. “For me, it’s really a top priority. This distance from the faults gives us enough time to warn people – and that can make a big difference in reducing injuries and damage,” Rowe said.

Seismologists encouraged anyone who felt shaking to report it through the USGS’s “Did You Feel It” system, saying that even small quakes could help scientists better understand seismic activity in Nevada.

Experts said that the swarm is worth monitoring but is not a cause for concern. They noted that earthquakes like the magnitude 5.8 that struck near Yerington in December 2024 typically occur in Nevada about every eight to 10 years, and said they will continue to monitor current activity closely.
