The strongest earthquake in Louisiana since at least 2020 shook parts of Shreveport Natchitoches, Houghton and other cities Thursday morning.

The 4.9-magnitude quake struck North Coushatta around 5:30 a.m., the latest in a series to hit the area since December.

Earthquakes are not a common weather phenomenon in the United States, although more small-magnitude earthquakes have been recorded in northern Louisiana recently, including seven near Mooringsport since December 2024.

Shakes in Shreveport

Celeste Lay, a journalist with KSLA-TV in Shreveport, reported shaking at the station on Fairfield Avenue.

The effects were felt for miles

Many residents shared how they felt in the Love Shreveport-Bossier Facebook group Thursday morning, where the quake could be felt as far as 90 miles from the epicenter.

A Houghton resident reported waking up to her bed shaking, and someone in Broadmoor reported hanging plants swaying in the rumble and waves swirling in the pool

“I thought I was imagining my bed shaking” around 5:30 a.m., one Bossier City resident reported, while another said her home’s chandelier was swinging so hard, she thought someone had pushed it.

Not on the fault line

Louisiana is not regularly exposed to natural earthquakes due to its geology, but as in East Texas and Oklahoma, an increase in tremors over recent years is believed to be due to the disposal of wastewater from oil and gas extraction through injection into the ground.

Most of these earthquakes are weak and shallow. The 4.9 magnitude earthquake is much stronger than most similar earthquakes.
