The Philadelphia Union (0-0-2) will host Western Conference rival San Jose Earthquakes (2-0-0) in a Saturday night showdown at Suapro Park that sees the Union look to snap a two-game losing skid. San Jose has had one of the best starts to the year, winning its first two games without conceding a goal, and can count on new DP Timo Werner. The Etihad are still in hot form, but will benefit from the return of Ezekiel Alladoh from suspension, and the potential debut of U22 initiative signing Philippe Ndinga.

Scouting Report: San Jose (WW) 2025 and offseason report

San Jose was a bit bipolar last season. They had a real electric attack between Joseph Martinez, CJ Espinosa, and Christian Arango. However, despite scoring 60 goals, they also conceded 63 goals, ending 2025 outside the playoff bubble.

You might think that would signal sweeping changes before 2026, and you’d be right…partially.

Externally, it appears that the Earthquakes were having a very bad season. Their departures doubled their incoming remittances. Many key pieces, including the electric front line, left. The club’s chief financial officer reportedly forgot to select Espinosa’s contract option.

Conversely, the only acquisitions they made were two SuperDraft picks (including Philadelphia Union II product and former academy Jack Jasinski) and a group of free agent transfers that included a player from Earthquakes II in the Next Pro, Jonathan Gonzalez from Juárez… oh yeah and Timo Werner. Werner is obviously the headline there, one of the biggest moves of last season, but there’s more going on in the Bay Area.

New-look earthquakes

You can call it addition by subtraction or just Bruce Arena magic, but suddenly the Quakes’ defense is very strong. 0 goals allowed in first two games. The shift from an attacking 3-4-3 mentality to a more realistic 4-2-3-1 may have played a part in this. Granted, both games came against the likes of Sporting Kansas City and Atlanta United – two teams still in the process of hitting the bottom – but last season they would have conceded sloppy goals in those games.

San Jose predicted lineup

This year, so far at least, the Earthquakes have been defensively stable. Goalkeeper Daniel’s form seems to have improved. Daniel Mooney, Reid Roberts, and Jamar Ricketts — three first-round SuperDraft picks the past two years — have all taken a big step forward. Mooney and Roberts are the team’s centre-back pairing, and Ricketts, a versatile threat on the left flank, has picked up an assist in each of the openers. Niko Tsakiris, who attracted some attention for his performance with the U.S. U-20 national team at last year’s World Cup, was given the keys to a 10th-place finish. Preston Goode scored in back-to-back games. Earthquakes seem ready to throw off almost everyone’s season forecast at this point.

Of course, it’s only been two weeks. San Jose certainly benefited from an easy opening series. But, with Werner waiting in the wings, and the young talent developing long-term at Arena, San Jose could be a really strong team. Either way, they will pose a good challenge to a Philadelphia Union team that has struggled to start the year.

Scouting Report: Philadelphia Union (LL) What went wrong

Things haven’t gone Philly’s way to start the year — in the league at least. Consecutive red cards for what amount to mental fouls – each from at least two of the team’s most important players – is unacceptable. But what’s even more worrying is the disjointed performance over the first 180 minutes in Major League Soccer.

While the defense is still a work in progress – and Ndinga’s arrival will make the team more complete – the depth is poor in the near term and worrisome in the long term. With Olwethu Makhanya suspended, and Olivier Mbizu out of form and largely missing from the squad, Bradley Carnell may have to get creative again in how he sets up the backline on Saturday. With that being said, Andre Blake is still a beast, and even if the defensive unit is shakier than last year, they should be able to do enough to keep the team going at this point.

What’s more pressing is how strong this team is offensively. Yes, the new additions are still taking shape, and Ezekiel Alladoh’s red card has clearly halted some of that process, but not scoring from open play in two games is not a good sign. It is clear that Al-Ittihad is suffering from the loss of Kai Wagner and the absence of Quinn Sullivan. They need another chance maker on the pitch.

Cavan case

While he is still developing – physically and as a player – I think Cavan Sullivan deserves a long run against San Jose. Indiana Vasiliev is a key part of Carnell’s press — which also wasn’t as effective as last season — but his ability as a playmaker is limited at best. Iloski is good, but he can’t be the sole creative outlet for the entire offense. Cavan have shown a willingness to advance the ball, and an eye for progressive passes, two traits the Etihad desperately need more of.

He may not start, but if Al-Ittihad needs a goal, he should be the first to come off the bench. If his appearances are limited to another 10 or 15 minutes, he will begin to raise serious questions about why he was signed in the first place. This team is committed to the Red Bull model. Look at what’s happening in Harrison. 16-17 year olds start and win matches. It’s time to pull the trigger and see what happens.

An overview of Philadelphia’s projected lineup

This rivalry usually results in close relationships. Both teams have very even statistics in the series over all, with 5 wins each, and drawn on 4 occasions. There has only been one match with a margin of victory greater than one goal: Union’s 4-2 win at PPL Park in 2014 (not fun fact: that match was actually Raiss Mbholi’s debut for Union).

The latest result was a 2-1 win for San Jose in the 2023 season at PayPal Park. Most of the leading scorers in this series have long since retired. MLS legend Chris Wendoloski tops the list with 4. Steven Lenhart, Andrew Wenger, Connor Casey and Alejandro Bedoya are tied for second place with 2.

Overall, this matchup will provide much-needed data on Philadelphia’s ongoing adjustments as they go through a minor rebuild. Expect San Jose to threaten the Union, especially by increasing pressure from wide spaces and recycling set-pieces. As always, Philadelphia will live and die by their press, so mentally prepare for the Union to improve in this game – as they have had slow starts in every league game.

Injury report: Out: Eddie Davis III (quad), Out: Quinn Sullivan (knee)

Decisive Match: Ezekiel Alladoh vs. Reed Roberts

This should be a great fight between two young, physically gifted talents. Alladoh is a true target forward that the Etihad haven’t had since Conor Casey.

Player to watch: Timo Werner

The Champions League winner and international star already picked up an assist on his debut for the Quakes last week. Whether he starts or comes off the bench, he will pose a serious threat to a somewhat shaky Etihad backline.

Prediction: Philadelphia Union 1 – 1 San Jose Earthquakes

It’s hard to see Al-Ittihad winning this title based on form. There are a lot of question marks. It is clear that the team is still adjusting to the departure of key players, while the replacements are settling in. Meanwhile, San Jose has a stronger defense than last season and can still find the back of the net. Union gets its first point of the season, but remains winless.
