People took to social media with reactions and questions after a 2.3 magnitude earthquake was felt in the area around Sleepy Hollow on Tuesday, March 10.

Commenters said they’ve experienced it as far away as Putnam County. “Felt it in Tarrytown! Thought it was a truck hitting a pothole on the Thruway,” one commenter said. Another wrote: “So loud and I felt it in Hawthorne! I thought someone was jackhammering the house.”

Oliver S. said: “No, earthquakes don’t seem to be occurring more frequently on average,” said Boyd, a research geophysicist at the USGS. “However, you can get bursts of activity after a larger earthquake (aftershocks and related clusters).”

Where on the seismic scale does a magnitude of 2.3 fall?

“A 2.3 magnitude earthquake is relatively small. Earthquakes at M3 or less are exceptionally unlikely to cause damage, and quakes at M2, you might only feel them if you’re at the top,” Boyd said.

Is the rate of earthquakes in our region expected to remain the same or change?

“I would like to keep it as is, unless we have a big earthquake, in which case you should expect aftershocks,” Boyd said. “In general, earthquakes can occur pretty much anywhere and at any time although they are more likely along plate boundaries. We can say that in New York State, there is an M3 or larger earthquake on average just under once a year. There is a tendency for earthquakes to occur in eastern and northeastern New York, as shown in the USGS 2023 National Earthquake Hazard Model.”

West Coast earthquakes seem to occur more frequently and with greater damage. Why is this?

“Certainly, earthquakes occur more frequently on the West Coast because it straddles plate boundaries, and the West Coast is more likely to experience a damaging earthquake (simply because earthquakes are more frequent). But for an earthquake of the same size, ground motions are actually stronger in the central and eastern United States (CEUS) because seismic ground motions do not weaken as quickly in the CEUS.”

The US Geological Survey said that severe earthquakes occurred in the eastern United States

In November 1755, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck about 50 miles northeast of Boston, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website.

Other strong earthquakes were centered in southeastern Missouri near the borders with Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee.

In August 1886, an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 to 7.2 occurred in Charleston, South Carolina. Much of Charleston was damaged or destroyed.

Earthquakes have been recorded in every state east of the Mississippi River.
