These American cars have been abandoned in Fukushima, Japan since 2011

On March 11, 2011, an earthquake struck 43 miles east of the Oshika Peninsula in Tohoku, and the country is often referred to as the Great East Japan Earthquake. The earthquake triggered a massive tsunami that eventually triggered a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Okuma, Fukushima Prefecture. The nuclear accident has received a Level 7 rating of the International Nuclear Event Scale.

As a result, residents were evacuated within a 12-mile radius of the power plant, including auto dealerships. One of those agents is what you see here, and it’s located in an abandoned town in Fukushima Prefecture.

As photographed by Obsidian Urbex Photography, these cars have been abandoned for a long time, preserving their condition by the time the owners left. Curiously, a lot of these cars were American.

Most notably the mandarin orange 1962 Chevrolet Impala SS. Next to it is a black Lincoln Town Car. According to the owner of the photos, the 2006 Toyota Tundra and 1989 Nissan 240SX are close, but they are not included in the photo collection. There are also two Cadillacs in front of the garage door – one a 1990s Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, and the other a Conseur limousine.

However, not all abandoned cars were American. There is a Japanese wort, which is a traditional Japanese wine that is full of motifs. According to Obsidian Urbex, this chair simulates a Buddhist temple and has motifs called Hō-ō (鳳凰) – an Asian bird roughly equivalent to the phoenix in Greek mythology.

It is amazing how time captured the essence of these cars, even though vegetation has already grown around them. However, the beauty of these machines is evident and we definitely hope they find a new home if they are deemed safe.
