In 2011, a 9.1 magnitude earthquake triggered a 130-foot tsunami that killed 20,000 people in Japan. Fifteen years later, we finally understand why. “The twisted mixture

March 11, 2011 is a date that Japan will remember forever.

This is because within six minutes, the island nation was hit by an earthquake so severe that it generated a tsunami of unexpected size and destruction.

In all, the 9.1 magnitude Tohoku earthquake and resulting tsunami caused nearly 20,000 deaths and a major accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Now, after fifteen long years, we finally understand why.

Thanks to an international team of researchers, a recent study published in the journal Science demonstrated that the massive size of the earthquake was the result of a slippery layer of clay-rich clay, just a few meters thick, in the Japan Trench.

To gather information about the Tohoku-oki Fault, researchers undertook a major drilling project – setting a new world record in the process – drilling to a depth of 7,906 meters below the sea surface.

What they discovered in the core samples they extracted left them astonished. The muddy layer, created by ancient sedimentary deposits, revealed for the first time how and why the 2011 earthquake was so devastating, as Australian National University Associate Professor Ron Hackney explained in a statement:

“This ancient, clay-rich clay formed from microscopic particles that slowly settled on the seafloor beneath the Pacific Ocean over time – a process that occurred over more than 130 million years – as the Pacific tectonic plates slowly moved westward and were eventually forced to yield to Japan. The fault zone formed in that weak layer of clay when those sediments slowly slid beneath Japan, moving about 10 cm per year. Given that the weak clay layer is sandwiched between stronger layers of rock higher up Below, the clay acted as a natural “rupture line,” causing the crack to form within that layer of clay.

So the slippery nature of the muddy layer caused the fault plane to behave very differently than scientists — and the Japanese government — had ever expected.

This is because after stress had built up in the plates over hundreds of years, when they finally came together, the slippery clay did not offer the same resistance that harder rock, for example, would provide, meaning that rupture continued along the fault, causing the sea floor to rise dramatically – which in turn led to the largest tsunami ever seen in Japan, with waves 130 feet high.

This valuable research will help scientists and officials understand how similar earthquakes will affect Japan in the future — as well as other countries with similar sedimentary layers, Hackney continued:

“The rupture surface was only a centimeter or so thick, yet it allowed 50 to 70 meters of movement on the fault and caused the seafloor off Japan to suddenly rise several meters during the earthquake. There are indications that sediments being pulled towards and under Sumatra may also contain a weak clay layer, suggesting that the giant 2004 tsunami may be linked to similar fault characteristics. Although we cannot be sure without extracting and analyzing core samples “Right from this mistake.”

The more we know, the better we can prepare.
