More than 100 homes reported damage after two earthquakes rocked the Assen area

More than 110 damage reports have been submitted following two earthquakes near the Eliveld gas field in Drenthe, authorities said on Sunday. Officials warn that the number of claims may continue to rise.

The first earthquake occurred at 2:14 a.m. Friday night with a magnitude of 3.0. A smaller aftershock, with a magnitude of 1.3, occurred three hours later at 5:14 a.m., according to the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI).

A spokesman for the Mining Damage Commission said reports were continuing to arrive “at any moment”, and most were coming from Assen, the provincial capital. Other reports came in from surrounding towns. The committee indicated that the damage includes internal and external damage to homes. Residents can file claims for compensation up to one year after earthquakes.

The municipality of Assen called for a “moderate, easy and humane” compensation process. Officials from Ain Hunzi and Medin Drenthe expressed similar support, urging the national government to quickly provide clear guidance.

The regional authorities in Drenthe expressed their shock at the earthquakes. “Residents were literally woken up by the earthquake,” said Agnes Mulder, King’s Commissioner in Drenthe. “We were shocked by its strength. We realize that this raises concerns and questions.”

Regional MP Bart Van Dyken said the damage handling “has to be different and better,” but did not provide details. Mulder stressed Drenthe’s commitment to improving procedures and expressed his appreciation for the national government contacting the province immediately on Saturday.

Of the more than 2,000 earthquakes linked to gas extraction in the Netherlands, only 25 reached a magnitude of 3.0 or higher. The last earthquake of this size occurred in Drenthe in October 2000.
