Recap: Sounders strike first, edge past San Jose Earthquakes for 1-0 away win

The Seattle Sounders beat the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 at PayPal Park in San Jose, California, on Sunday, behind a first-period goal by Paul Rothrock.

The Sounders had a great look at goal in the sixth minute when Jorge Minongo crossed from the left and crossed for Cody Baker, but his subsequent shot from the top of the box went wide of the far post.

Seattle took the lead in the 20th minute at the end of a great rebounding offensive play. Danny Musovski’s clearance was found in the blocking play, and Musovski dropped a pass to Jesus Ferreira. Ferreira then threaded a beautiful through ball in behind for the onrushing Rothrock, who calmly scored his second goal of a young MLS season.

San Jose had several well-intentioned looks at goal inside the box in the 37th minute, but heroic defending from Jackson Ragin and Antino Lopez blocked Earthquakes’ shots and forced a corner kick.

The Earthquakes’ best chance of the first half came in the 45th minute when Niko Tsakiris fired a free kick from 25 yards out against the far post.

Rothrock almost doubled the scoring in the 48th minute when he played in behind and volleyed a half-volley, but Quakes goalkeeper Daniel did well to dive to his right to deny.

The Sounders then withstood a fair amount of pressure over the next 15 minutes but did not break. Preston Goode had the best chance in the 60th minute when he dropped in behind to have a 1-on-1 with Andrew Thomas, but the Sounders goalkeeper did his best to thwart Goode’s effort.

Lopez made the defensive play of the game in the 74th minute when Thomas got a piece of Judd’s chance on the counterattack but not enough to keep it out of the net. Lopez continued to track back and slid to clear a potential equalizer near the goal line.

Thomas came roaring back in the 83rd minute when Timo Werner shot into the box and crossed the ball into the path of Ronaldo Vieira, who spun and ripped a shot that Thomas cleared out of play for a corner kick.

Thomas denied Tsakiris’ shot on the next play, pushing the effort over the bar, before again stopping Judd’s header.

Seattle looked to ice the game in the 86th minute when Baker scored what would have been his first MLS goal, but it was disallowed after video review after Albert Rusnak was deemed offside during the shot.

Thomas made another difficult save in the third minute of stoppage time when he blocked an attempt that appeared to be sneaking inside the near post.

The win moved the Sounders to fifth place in the Western Conference with nine points from four matches (3-1-0).

The Sounders will host the Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday (8 p.m. PT, FS2, TUDN) at One Spokane Stadium in Spokane, Washington, in the second round of CONCACAF Champions Cup action following a 3-0 win in Vancouver last week. Seattle then visits Minnesota United in league action next Sunday (11:30 a.m. PT; Apple TV).

Three quick meals

Three days after a hard-fought win over the Vancouver Whitecaps in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer used a heavy rotation, including Tacoma players Defiance Lopez and Peter Kingston making their first career MLS starts. Right-back Becker also got the nod, this being his second start since 2024. The young Sounders side performed extremely well, keeping the ‘Quakes’, who entered the weekend with the highest expected goals mark in the league, off the scoresheet for the first time this season.

Schmetzer threw Lopez at the end of the Whitecaps’ game on Thursday as a way to give him a taste of the action of the game before Sunday. Lopez made the most of his opportunity, making a brilliant challenge inside the box to keep a clean sheet in Vancouver before putting in another impressive defensive display in San Jose, including a massive goal-line clearance to keep Seattle shut down.

Three road wins on the trot
