A man extends his hand to another, his steps quicken. Sirens started blaring, warning that the incoming missiles were only minutes away.

We had all just stopped on the side of a busy highway on the outskirts of Tel Aviv.

The usual rules for heading to a bunker are out the window – all we can do is find a trench.

This is the way of life in Israel right now, with alarms still blaring all day and night across the country.

After evacuating the area, we realized that the missiles had hit neighborhoods a few kilometers away from us.

We head to a built-up area where firefighters are putting out the flames of cars that have caught fire. Local residents escaped injury.

The scene was quite chaotic when we arrived as soldiers cordoned off the area and warned people not to return.

A 21-year-old woman named Keshet tells us that part of an Iranian cluster bomb fell near her house.

“There was a boom,” she says. “We ran outside and saw the fire. It was like an earthquake – very scary.”

There’s not a lot of complacency. The war has entered its third week and people have confidence in the ability of Israeli defense systems to intercept missiles.

Some pass through and there is another real danger of debris falling from the sky after interception.

Israeli defensive missiles collide with missiles coming from Iran or Hezbollah, and the debris could fall anywhere at all.

Kobe Hassouna is angry. He lives next to a storage container that was destroyed in a fire when debris fell from an intercepted missile.

When we talk to him, the acrid smell of smoke still lingers in the air.

“Are they [the Iranians] So they know what they are aiming for? “They just shoot,” he says. It landed right next to my house. Of all places.”

But this idea that no one wants to be unlucky still largely drives people into shelters. Safe spaces under their homes or underground. Not everyone has a safe room in their home.

In an underground parking lot, we met 46-year-old Alex Proskurov from Rishon LeZion, south of Tel Aviv.

“We’re not really interested in sitting in a bomb shelter for months,” he says defiantly. “As long as we finish the job once and for all.”

His advice: “Don’t be a hero and it will be okay.”

Iran does not cause large-scale human casualties in Israel, unlike the Israeli bombs it launches into Iran and Lebanon.

But it successfully engages in psychological warfare.
