‘Like an earthquake’ | Overnight storms bring down huge limbs outside a Blount County family’s home

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Overnight storms brought damaging winds to several areas in East Tennessee, including outside of Maryville. Justin Williams and his family woke up to a fallen tree on their Morganton Road home.

Recovering from Sunday’s storm will take a toll on the Williams family’s wallet. The tree took out the family’s car and wagon.

“All of a sudden, I heard a big crash, like an earthquake,” Williams said. “Then my daughter comes running over there. She says, ‘Hey, a tree fell, a huge tree.’ The cart disappeared. The Cadillac is gone.” I’m like, “What?”

That wagon was a staple on family trips, and Williams said he had plans to buy a Cadillac, which would go to his son.

“Then I ran out,” Williams said. “Then I saw Gabriel in the kitchen. It’s like he only moved 10 or 15 feet to the right, so maybe he wasn’t here.”

However, Gabrielle wasn’t the only thing to survive Sunday’s storm. Part of the family’s history is being able to withstand the wind and rain, Williams said.

“My father-in-law who died of cancer. We found his picture, and he’s lying there by the tree,” Williams said. “This big limb was on the top of my wife’s car. And I looked down, and this is the picture. I got goosebumps. To be honest, I got goosebumps. It’s like he protected her.”

As for the next step, Williams said it will be cleaning up and buying cars.

“I think maybe a tree lopping service first to get the tree out,” he said. “Then I’m working on getting my son another car to go to school. I hope to get another campervan so we can take the family on trips.”
