Possible earthquake shakes Chesterfield as residents report spikes

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. – Several neighbors in Chesterfield reported feeling a tremor Friday evening. Although the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has not confirmed it is an earthquake, CBS 6 meteorologist Julie Watkins said the event registered on some local seismometers.

“We also had a co-worker who reported, not only the ground shaking, but also a loud bang, that kind of rocks the house back and forth. That’s typical earthquake behavior,” Watkins said.

Less than a week ago, a minor earthquake occurred in Appomattox.

“On average, we see about one earthquake a month here in Virginia, and central Virginia is a bit of a hotspot, so it’s not unusual, but they’re usually not that strong,” Watkins said.

Watkins noted that an earthquake is usually felt in the region only two to three times a year.

“We will allow geologists to confirm whether or not this was a real earthquake, but all indications are that it probably was,” Watkins said.

CBS 6 asked our Facebook followers if they felt that way. Dozens of neighbors in Chesterfield and South Richmond said they did.

“Yes. Loud bang and then the house shook. Off Beach Road near Pocahontas State Park,” Whitney Rogers wrote.

“Yes, in the Highlands,” Sandy Luckinbill Gatulin wrote. “A strong, pronounced shaking that lasts for a few seconds.”
