Krasheninnikov volcano eruption in Kamchatka, Russia after 600 years
Krasheninnikov volcano in Russia erupted for the first time in 600 years. Some scientists believe it is related to a recent massive earthquake.
Two small earthquakes occurred near Dillsboro, North Carolina, on the evening of March 23. The strongest earthquakes recorded a magnitude of 2.7, which is sometimes felt by people nearby. Although earthquakes are unusual, earthquakes are not unheard of in North Carolina, where the largest magnitude 5.5 was recorded in 1916.
Earthquakes large enough to be noticed are unusual in North Carolina — but not unheard of.
The National Weather Service office in Greenville-Spartanburg posted on Facebook on Tuesday, March 24, notifying the public of two earthquakes that occurred Monday evening, March 23, near Dillsboro in western North Carolina.
The previous two quakes had a magnitude of 2.7, while the North Carolina Geological Survey reported that earthquakes with a magnitude of around 2.5 “are generally not felt, but recorded on seismographs.” Sometimes earthquakes with a magnitude of just over 2.5 are sometimes felt by people nearby.
A number of commenters responded to the weather service’s Facebook post, reporting their experiences with the earthquake. Commentators compared the feeling of the stronger nearby earthquake to strong winds, continuous thunder, a large truck passing nearby, and more.
