The Pentagon is sending thousands of soldiers from the elite 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East. Paratroopers are specialists in air assault operations. President Trump said talks with Iran were happening “right now” and that Tehran wants to end the war. He said members of his administration were negotiating with the “right people” in Iran and that “we have won this war.” Trump’s claims came after Iran denied any contact with the US, with Iran’s parliament speaker calling claims of talks designed to “manipulate” oil and financial markets “fake news”. Meanwhile, the exchange of fire between Israel and Iran has continued. Iran fired missiles at Israel after hitting dozens of sites inside Iran. Israel has also continued its offensive in southern Lebanon, where it announced plans to seize and occupy areas to create what it called a “security zone”.
