M5.0 earthquake hits north of Tokyo, no tsunami

A strong earthquake struck eastern Japan on Wednesday morning.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said that a 5-magnitude earthquake occurred north of Tokyo shortly after 10:00 a.m., with the epicenter in the southern Ibaraki prefecture. The earthquake did not pose a tsunami risk.

The agency determined the epicenter of the earthquake at a depth of 48 kilometers.

The earthquake registered a magnitude of less than 5 on the Japanese scale, from 0 to 7, in the city of Moka, Tochigi Prefecture.

Officials say this is the first time since March 2024 that an earthquake of this intensity has been observed in Tochigi Prefecture. At that time, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake occurred in southern Ibaraki Prefecture.

The meteorological agency warned that in areas where the tremors were strong, the risk of rock falls and landslides may have increased.

Officials call on residents to remain alert for about a week in anticipation of tremors of less than 5 degrees. They say large earthquakes often occur within two to three days.

The Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train has stopped temporarily

The operator of the Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train announced that service has been resumed. It had temporarily suspended work between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori stations due to the earthquake.

Subway and railway operators in Tokyo say their services have not been affected.

Operators of two nuclear power plants in northern Japan say there have been no reports of malfunctions at their facilities so far.

One is the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, and the other is the Tokai No. 2 Nuclear Power Plant in Ibaraki Prefecture. They say that radiation levels around plants remain unchanged.

Professor Sakai Shinichi of the University of Tokyo’s Earthquake Research Institute warned of a possible tremor the size of the magnitude 5 quake that struck northern Tokyo on Wednesday morning. He urged residents to remain alert for about a week.

Sakai said Wednesday’s quake was estimated to have occurred at a depth of 50 kilometers, adding that it appeared to have occurred near where the Philippine Sea plate sinks beneath a continental plate.

He said earthquakes occurred frequently in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, the epicenter of Wednesday’s tremor. He added that the latest earthquake was slightly larger than previous earthquakes.

Sakai warned people to prepare for earthquakes of similar strength in the region.
