Bangkok’s underlying soft soil basin could significantly intensify seismic tremors and prolong the duration of tremors’ persistence, making the capital more vulnerable than previously expected, according to Professor Dr Penong Warnichai, director of the Thailand Earthquake Research Centre.

He added that the recent earthquakes were linked to movement along the Sagaing Fault in Myanmar, which led to slip in the middle section of the fault. However, if the slide occurs in a deeper part closer to Thailand, the impact on Bangkok could be much more serious.
