Mild earthquakes were felt in Koraput district, but no immediate damage was reported

Parts of Odisha’s Koraput district, including Lamtaput and adjoining areas, witnessed mild earthquakes late on Saturday night, causing a brief panic among residents. The earthquake was felt around 11:30 pm, prompting people to leave their homes.

Several locations, including Koraput, Jeypore, Lamtaput, Sunapeda, Burigoma, Similigoda, Nandapur, Potangi and Damanjodi, reported tremors that lasted for a few seconds.

Tremors recorded at a shallow depth

According to information shared by the National Center for Seismology on X, the depth of the earthquake was 5 kilometers. The latitude was recorded at 18.573 and longitude at 82.559, indicating the presence of shallow seismic activity in the area.

Residents of Lamtaput, Machkund, Anaka Deli, Gonipada and various parts of Nandapur district also reported that they felt the tremors. The shaking continued for approximately 6 to 8 seconds.

Residents panic due to shaking furniture

Eyewitnesses said that the furniture inside the homes began to shake, accompanied by unusual sounds, which worried people. Many at first could not understand the cause of the disturbance.

“We were about to go to bed when we heard a loud and intense sound that left us shaking,” said Mona Panda, a Lamtaput resident. “A wall collapsed inside my house, forcing me to go outside with my family. We all gathered outside, fearing that the tremors might happen again.”

However, it was later confirmed that the shaking was due to an earthquake. More details are awaited.
