US-Iran Ceasefire: Is There a “Workable” Peace Plan? | Global News Podcast

President Donald Trump says the US and Iran have agreed to a two-week ceasefire while a more permanent deal is negotiated. Iran has presented a 10-point proposal, which President Trump called “a useful basis for negotiation.” That plan includes requests for the US to withdraw military forces from the region; lifting economic sanctions on Iran; pay compensation for war damage; and allowing Tehran to maintain control of the Strait of Hormuz. Washington unveiled its 15-point plan last month, which analysts said included conditions Iran would find difficult to accept. Both the US and Iran have claimed this moment as a victory. But several key points of the conflict remain unresolved, including Iran’s authorization to enrich uranium for its civilian nuclear program. And, Iranian officials say they will control which ships are allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump has said the US and Israeli strikes — which killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several other top officials — have effectively changed Iran’s regime, although critics have argued the Islamic Republic’s replacement leaders follow the same ideology. And although Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he supports the ceasefire, he has said it does not help Israel’s fight against Hezbollah in Lebanon. We ask the BBC’s diplomatic correspondent Paul Adams what he thinks the US and Iran have achieved in this war, and whether they can find common ground in their contrasting plans for peace.
