18 earthquakes recorded off the coast of Washington Sunday morning – KIRO 7 News Seattle

Eighteen small to medium sized earthquakes were recorded off the coast of Washington on Sunday.

The quakes were recorded over several hours in the early morning, with the largest being 240 miles west of Westport with a magnitude of 4.2 and at a depth of 10 kilometers just before 5 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

All 18 earthquakes Sunday morning remained in the 2-4 magnitude range, which is very common over the course of a year. Michigan Tech University estimates that millions of earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or less are recorded annually, and approximately 500,000 earthquakes with magnitudes between 2.5 and 5.4 occur.

The vast majority of earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or less are not felt, but show up on a seismograph, while earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 to 5.4 are mostly felt and tend to cause minor damage.

Earthquakes do not pose a threat to the PNW wilderness area

Seismologist and director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, Harold Tobin, told the Seattle Times that this group of quakes is nothing to worry about.

“These types of earthquakes do not pose a tsunami risk,” he said. “It’s, first of all, not big enough.”

The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) noted that USGS websites indicated the quakes “were not near the Cascadia subduction zone, and do not indicate anything about potential earthquakes there.”

“They are also not at Axial Seamount volcano, which others have predicted will be close to a subsea eruption, even though they are farther north along the same ridge,” PNSN reported. “This swarm does not pose a threat to the PNW wilderness.”

Tobin explained that the Juan de Fuca plate is spreading away from the Pacific plate, creating new Earth’s crust.

“It’s just a real sign that tectonic plates are moving and active,” he told the Seattle Times.
