RENO, Nev. — A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck a rural area in northwestern Nevada on Monday, alarming residents in the area and in parts of California, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake’s magnitude was briefly downgraded to 5.5 before it was upgraded again to 5.7, according to the US Geological Survey. The quake occurred just before 6:30 p.m. PT near Lahontan State Recreation Area, about 65 miles southeast of Reno.

The US Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was about 12.4 miles east-southeast of the town of Silver Springs and at a depth of 3.1 miles. This was followed by a series of aftershocks, the largest of which was about 3.6 magnitude.

A “Did You Feel It” map released by the US Geological Survey showed that tremors were felt in Reno and Carson City, Nevada, and Lake Tahoe and Truckee, California. The quake was classified as a magnitude 7 earthquake, according to a USGS aftershock map.

Christy Rowe, director of the Nevada Seismic Laboratory, told the Reno Gazette-Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, that the last measurement was a magnitude of 5.68 as they continued to analyze the quake. The earthquake was originally reported as a magnitude 5.4 by the Nevada Seismological Laboratory.

“It was felt by a lot of people over a large area, which is kind of exciting,” Rowe said, adding that more aftershocks in the 3.0 magnitude range and possibly larger are likely to be felt in the area.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and the National Weather Service in Reno said no damage was reported.

“We are pleased to report that to date there have been no significant reports of damage from the earthquake,” Taylor Allison, director of Leon County Emergency Management and Governmental Affairs, told the Reno Gazette Journal. “Leon County crews will continue to conduct damage assessments over the coming days to ensure there are no impacts to critical infrastructure.”

Nevada has seen 31 earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or greater since 1975, according to USGS data. Among them, 13 had a magnitude of 5.5 or more.
