Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell announced Monday that he plans to resign from Congress after explosive allegations of sexual misconduct against him. The California Democrat’s announcement comes in the face of a newly announced House ethics investigation and increased pressure to quit on both sides of the aisle. Minutes later, embattled GOP Rep. Tony Gonzales announced he too would leave Congress, facing the prospect of a high-stakes vote that could have made him the seventh member to oust the House just days earlier. The Texas Republican said he plans to “submit his resignation” on Tuesday, which would mean his resignation, GOP leadership sources told CNN.
