At the end of a historic election, Hungary’s autocratic leader Viktor Orban is out of power after 16 years in power. It’s a result that has sent shockwaves through the MAGA movement (turning JD Vance into a meme) and forced a rethink of Donald Trump’s global influence. In this week’s FourSight, Kiran Moodley looks at how Péter Magyar and his Tisza Party beat a populist strongman at his own game and gave Orbán’s allies around the world pause for thought. The landslide victory, in which Tisza won almost 70% of the parliamentary seats, is more than a change of government – it represents a seismic shift in the global far-right trend and the future of illiberal democracy. For years, Orbán’s Hungary served as a laboratory for a specific populism focused on the control of the judiciary and the curtailment of media freedoms. Now, with JD Vance demoted and Orban’s closest allies (including Trump) reeling, the eager students of the ‘Orban playbook’ have lost their teacher. As the Hungarian economy stalled and inflation eroded living standards, populism eventually failed. We examine the internal scandals and economic pressures that led to a record 80% voter turnout, and showed that even entrenched systems can be destroyed when major voter issues drown out grand ideological narratives. The European Union is breathing heavily and Moscow has lost its most reliable ally in the EU, but we wonder what the real lessons are: it is clear that the election results reach far beyond Budapest.
