A 4.0 magnitude earthquake in southeast Missouri prompts a closer look at the New Madrid Fault

PEMISCOTT COUNTY, Mo. (KFVS) – A powerful earthquake that struck southeast Missouri on Thursday gave experts a closer look at activity along the New Madrid Fault Line.

“It’s the strongest earthquake we’ve seen in several years in the New Madrid area,” said Nathan Moran, a research scientist at the University of Memphis Earthquake Research and Information Center.

The 4.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Pemiscot County on Thursday was felt in several states.

“We felt it even here in Memphis,” Moran said. “But the system doesn’t usually experience earthquakes of this size very often.”

According to the US Geological Survey, 20 earthquakes have occurred in the New Madrid earthquake zone in the past three weeks alone.

Recent activity along the fault is common, but not very common, Moran said.

“The stress level in a seismic zone can be enough to trigger an earthquake every now and then,” Moran says. “We have small tremors, doubles and triples all the time. Sometimes you’ll get something a little stronger, and this is one of those occasions.”

Moran said Thursday’s earthquake occurred in their seismic network. He said that thanks to the data they collected, they had a better understanding of the area.

“There have been earthquakes around the system. We have earthquakes in other places that our instruments feel,” Moran said. “But to have an earthquake of this magnitude within the system, and within all of our instruments, is something we can use to collect that data to better understand the seismic zone.”

As for whether this points to something bigger, Moran said the risks remain low.

But he said the quake should serve as a reminder that the heart of the region lies in an active seismic zone.

“Just being prepared in case there’s something stronger, which is your normal emergency preparedness for any occasion,” Moran said.

Moran said an aftershock survey is currently being conducted, and the area may feel small aftershock sequences over the next week.
