The US-Israeli war with Iran — and Washington and Tehran’s dual blockade of the Strait of Hormuz — has driven up the price of jet fuel and warned of a global shortage in the transportation industry in the coming weeks. Several airlines have raised seat prices, and others have started canceling flights. German airline Lufthansa has announced it will cut 20,000 short-haul flights over the summer as rising fuel costs make travel unprofitable. Willie Walsh, head of the International Air Transport Association, said flight cancellations due to fuel shortages are already being seen in parts of Asia – which rely heavily on Gulf fuel – and could occur in Europe by the end of May. EU energy commissioner Dan Jorgensen said Europe is already experiencing “a price crisis and not yet a supply crisis, but unfortunately we cannot guarantee that we will avoid a supply crisis.
