UN Secretary-General urges investment in disaster resilience to honor earthquake victims

UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for investing in disaster resilience to honor earthquake victims.

Mr. Guterres made the call in his message on Wednesday, on the occasion of the first International Day of Remembrance for Earthquake Victims, observed annually on 29 April.

This day provides an opportunity to remember those who lost their lives, and renew commitment to prevention, preparedness and building back better, in line with the priorities of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

“Earthquakes are one of the most dangerous threats to nature. In seconds, they can reduce homes to rubble, undo decades of progress, and take thousands of lives.

“On this day, let us honor those who lost their lives by investing in disaster resilience.

He added: “Effective precautions, from regular drills, to stronger building codes, to better urban planning, are key to protecting communities. International solidarity is vital to response and recovery.”

According to him, earthquakes are inevitable, but the destruction they cause is not necessary.

Mr. Guterres added: “With determination and forethought, we can build safer towns and cities, no matter how shaking the ground.”
