Toronto FC draws with league leaders Earthquakes

The stands at BMO Stadium were shaking on Saturday afternoon, especially during Toronto FC’s agonizingly close chance to win.

Attacking midfielder Daniel Saloi sent the ball towards the open goal from the right mid-space just outside the penalty area in the 86th minute. But just as the ball appeared to cross the goal line, San Jose Earthquakes defender Reed Roberts cleared it out of harm’s way, denying the Reds the go-ahead goal.

In the end, TFC managed to earn a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the MLS leaders, the Earthquakes.

“I haven’t gotten a look yet,” TFC coach Robin Fraser said of the play. “The coaches would say, ‘Hey, do you want to see it?’ And I’d say, ‘No,’ because I didn’t want to lose my crap over it. So I didn’t show up.”

Fraser said he was proud of the way his injury-plagued team played against the Earthquakes, who entered the match with just one loss in 10 games.

“Personality,” Fraser said when asked to sum up his club’s performance. “This team has been, for a while, a group you can always count on to fight. They’ll always put in a really good turnaround.”

“When we play with that kind of urgency and that kind of effort, it’s tough to play against. I was really proud of the way we approached the game and the way we played. It was efficient, it was practical, and through it we were able to create some good chances.”

Saloi, who joined the Reds (3-3-5) this season via trade from Sporting Kansas City, scored TFC’s only goal of the game and was inches away from contributing to the win. The Hungarian international now has four goals and three assists for his new club.

“Daniel is a big positive for this team,” said TFC winger Raheem Edwards, who also played a strong game for the Reds. “This is a very direct player – he wants to attack the goal, he wants to shoot, he wants to create chances, he wants to combine. We need that in our team.

“How important is it?” Fraser added when asked about signing Saloi this season. “You know the answer to that. Daniel Pickup has been amazing. He’s been a great addition and continues to produce for us.”

The Reds had 51 percent to 49 percent of possession and had 12 shots, one more than the Earthquakes (9-1-1), although the visitors managed four shots on goal to Toronto’s two.

The Reds opened the scoring two minutes into the game when Saloi fired a shot into the far corner from the left side of the penalty area, following a good pass from Jonathan Osorio and a second assist to Markus Simarmancic, his first ever assist for TFC.

The Earthquakes responded in the 14th minute when Preston Good redirected Niko Tsakiris’ free kick into the net.

Osorio fell hard in the 36th minute after being fouled by San Jose defender Ronaldo Vieira. Osorio was able to stay in the match, while Vieira received a yellow card for the foul.

TFC goalkeeper Luka Gavran had to make a good save in extra time in the first half to keep the game tied.

Midway through the second half, the Earthquakes appeared to get away with a handball in front of their goal. Two minutes later, San Jose scored a goal, but the referee ruled it out for offside.

The Reds’ squad has been devastated by injuries to some key players, including striker Josh Sargent (groin strain), midfielder Djurdje Mihajlovic (pelvis), and defenders Richie Larrea (groin), Matheus Pereira (groin) and Nexoen Gomis (Achilles). Center back Walker Zimmerman returned to the lineup after missing last week’s game.

Forward Timo Werner, the Earthquakes’ third-leading scorer with four goals, did not make the trip to Toronto for San Jose.

TFC II defender Micah Chisholm made his TFC debut as a substitute in the 46th minute.

The Reds face Canadian Premier League side Atletico Ottawa in a Canadian Championship preliminary game on Tuesday night and then the Reds host Inter Miami next Saturday afternoon at BMO Stadium.
