Iran’s crackdown: why executions are on the rise | Global News Podcast

The United Nations has condemned the crackdown in Iran, warning that executions and mass arrests have increased during the war. Since the start of the war against Iran, the US and Israel have executed at least 21 people and arrested more than 4,000 on national security charges, with many facing unfair trials and torture, according to the UN’s rights office. “I am shocked that, in addition to the serious effects of the conflict, the rights of the Iranian people continue to be harshly and brutally taken away by the authorities,” said UN human rights chief Volker Türk, calling for an immediate end to the death penalty in Iran. It comes after US President Donald Trump said his intervention helped save eight women detained in Iran from the death penalty. Iran countered that none of the women Trump mentioned had ever been executed and accused the president of false reports. We speak to BBC Persian’s Parham Ghobadi.
