After weeks of earthquakes and aftershocks, Silver Springs residents say the ground won’t stop moving.

The tremors began after a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck on April 13, triggering a series of aftershocks across parts of northern Nevada. Many of those quakes were strong enough to shake homes, shake shelves, and keep residents on edge.

“It’s scary, you know?” said Patricia of Silver Springs.

People in the area say they are now taking extra precautions inside their homes, such as removing high surfaces, securing breakable items, and locking cabinets to prevent any damage during sudden shaking.

“We already removed the refrigerator, the bookshelves, anything breakable,” Patricia said. “We made sure our lockers were locked.”

Community members also shared their experiences online. The earthquakes “definitely shook our place and left everything shaking and swaying,” wrote Britney, a Stagecoach resident, adding concerns that a larger quake could occur.

Area resident Holly described the experience as “unnerving”, saying that even when people don’t feel small earthquakes, “everything seems off balance all the time.”

According to the Reno Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, the fault responsible for the activity is still active and continues to expand.

“We’re seeing a lot of aftershocks and a lot of big aftershocks,” said seismologist Christy Rowe, director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory. “The fault extends in a westerly direction toward Silver Springs.”

Scientists say the initial quake was also unusually shallow, being only a few miles below the surface, which made the tremors more intense and even caused visible cracks in some areas.

“So it’s probably two or three miles deep instead of the usual five or seven miles,” Rowe said. “That’s why we saw cracks in the surface.”

While such quake swarms are not common in Nevada, experts say there is no clear timeline for when the activity will subside.

“We don’t have a good idea how long this could last,” Rowe said.

Right now, experts say the risk of a larger earthquake is slightly high, but not high enough to warrant evacuations. Instead, they recommend residents stay prepared by securing heavy objects and identifying safe places to hide during shaking.
