Earthquake: A 4.5 magnitude earthquake hits Kokrajhar and Dhubri districts in Assam

A moderate magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck parts of Assam on Saturday afternoon, shaking areas around Kokrajhar and Dhubri and sparking reports of mild tremors in nearby towns.

Dispur: A moderate magnitude 4.5 earthquake shook parts of Assam’s Kokrajhar-Dhubri belt on Saturday afternoon, briefly shaking homes and workplaces in several towns in the district.

According to the National Seismological Center, the earthquake occurred at around 2:40 pm Indian time at a shallow depth of about 10 km, and its epicenter was near South Salmara Mankachar in Dhubri district.

The tremor was felt in nearby areas including Dhubri, Bilaspara, Gauripur and Kokrajhar, where residents reported a mild but noticeable tremor that lasted a few seconds. In many places, people said they felt doors and windows shaking, while household items and furniture saw slight movement. Although the tremors created temporary panic, there have been no reports of injuries or structural damage so far.

Due to its shallow depth, the earthquake’s impact was felt more strongly at the surface, although its magnitude remained moderate. Shallow earthquakes tend to release energy near populated areas, making them more noticeable over wider areas. In this case, tremors were also reported in parts of neighboring West Bengal and even isolated locations in Bhutan.

The area lies within a seismically active region in northeastern India, where tectonic movement between major plates regularly produces low to moderate earthquakes. While such events are not uncommon, authorities continue to monitor the area for any aftershocks or further seismic activity following Saturday’s quake.

Officials advised residents to remain alert and follow basic safety precautions, although initial assessments indicate no major damage or disruption due to the quake.
