The Brawley earthquake swarm in Imperial County begins to slow after more than 350 recorded earthquakes, including a magnitude 4.7.

BRAWLEY, Calif. (KABC) — A seismic swarm made up of hundreds of quakes that shook Imperial County this weekend will reportedly slow down Sunday.

A swarm is a group of earthquakes numbering in the tens to thousands, where many earthquakes of similar size occur and there are no obvious mainshocks.

Since Saturday morning, more than 350 small earthquakes have struck near the city of Brawley, between the Salton Sea and the U.S.-Mexico border.

The strongest was a 4.7-magnitude earthquake that occurred shortly after midnight.

Forecast tremors began around 3 a.m. Saturday.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services says it is monitoring the situation. No major damage or injuries have been reported so far.

Earthquake expert Dr Lucy Jones says this type of activity is common in the Brawley Seismic Zone.

The city of Brawley issued a statement on Sunday saying it was continuing to monitor earthquake activity in the area. Crews responded to several minor issues, including water leaks and utility concerns, officials said.

“At this time, there is no immediate threat to public safety and no significant damage to infrastructure within the city has been identified,” the city wrote.

An Eyewitness News viewer, who did not want to go on camera, called ABC7 on Saturday about the swarm and said she felt another quake while on the phone with us.

“I was just scared. Suddenly, it was a big tremor, and everything started moving. And I said to myself, ‘Holy ore.’ They kept coming and coming and coming and coming. And as we’re talking now, I feel it rumbling beneath me.” Kathleen Singh said.
