‘This is an earthquake’ – Neville describes Arsenal drama as ‘biggest moment in VAR history’

Gary Neville has claimed that a dramatic late intervention in Arsenal’s win over West Ham was perhaps the “biggest moment in the history of VAR” in the Premier League.

The relegation-threatened Hammers looked to have snatched a 1-1 draw against title-chasing Arsenal when Callum Wilson scored in stoppage time at the London Stadium.

But after a long review, in a decision that had major repercussions for both sides of the table, the goal was disallowed due to a foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya by Pablo.

Former Manchester United and England defender Neville, who was working as a co-commentator for Sky Sports, felt it was a big moment and the right decision was made in the end.

“This is an earthquake, a momentary tremor,” Neville said.

“I have to say the big striker has his arm on David Raya. He’s really disabling him.

“VAR, what are they going to do? This is probably the biggest moment in the history of VAR in the Premier League. This is massive.

“I think it’s wrong. His arm is held over Raya. She’s on him the whole time. He’s holding his neck and chest. I think it’s wrong.”

“But does VAR have the audacity and courage to make the decision? This is huge for refereeing in this country. This is too big to get it wrong.” Acting on advice from VAR Darren England, match referee Chris Kavanagh reviewed the footage on the pitchside monitor and, after a process lasting more than four minutes, disallowed the goal.

Roy Keane, a colleague of Neville’s, had little sympathy for Pablo.

“Don’t put your hands on the goalkeeper, and certainly don’t leave them for three or four seconds,” he said.

“Obviously there is madness there, there are a lot of other mistakes, all kinds of mistakes happen – but because the goalkeeper plays a big role, I think it is a mistake.

“He should know they will check VAR.” Ian Wright, the former Arsenal and West Ham striker, said the decision was “without a doubt” the right one.

“I think David Raya would simply realize that if he wasn’t obstructed,” Wright said. “You can see him there, and he’s pulling it there, and then his arm appears.”
