An earthquake swarm shakes southern California and southwestern Arizona

PHOENIX (AZFamily) – Southern California and southwestern Arizona remained on earthquake alert Monday evening after a weeklong swarm rocked Imperial County.

Nearly 300 earthquakes have struck the region in the past seven days, with the strongest earthquake measuring 4.7.

The tremor was felt in Imperial County, but residents in Brawley, California, say the recent activity stands out from the occasional earthquakes they have become accustomed to.

“I remember hearing a rumbling sound, it sounded like it was going to be a big earthquake,” Brawley resident Thomas Berry said. “But I didn’t expect it to be this big.”

Perry said the quake struck quickly while he was walking his dog, knocking out power to parts of the city and leaving his home full of broken glass. He said items were also tossed off shelves inside local grocery stores.

Another resident, Mia Gomez, said she felt the strongest shaking on the fourth floor of her apartment complex.

“I was on the bed… moving and talking when I felt bigger,” Gomez said. “I remember thinking, ‘This is really big.’”

Gomez said the quake caused minor damage in her complex, including broken pipes, forcing some neighbors to evacuate.

“There was water leaking on every floor, and I could see the cracks,” she said.

Why is it happening and what to expect next

Imperial County is no stranger to seismic activity. Ramon Arrowsmith, a professor of Earth and space exploration at Arizona State University, said the quakes were concentrated under the Brawley Zone in an area affected by major fault systems.

“What’s happening is that the big faults that allow western California to move northwest due to plate tectonics…the Imperial Fault and the San Andreas Fault,” Arrowsmith said.

Arrowsmith said swarms in this area can last for up to two weeks, and that this activity is considered fairly normal. He added that the swarm does not necessarily mean that a major earthquake is imminent.
