The British Geological Survey confirms a 2.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in Powys

By this scale, the earthquake could be described as a “minor earthquake” and was “noticeable to some”, with the British Geological Survey (BGS) recording the epicenter as having occurred between Llanbister and Llanbadarn Fenydd, in an area known as Castlewood, close to the A483 main road.

It was the second largest earthquake felt in the UK in the past two months, striking at 8.33am on Tuesday (May 12).

BGS confirms it could have been felt in the Rhayader area. A local resident in Llanworthhole claimed she felt it, saying: “I thought it was a huge tractor passing by.”

It operates a network of sensors across the UK to monitor UK and overseas earthquakes, providing objective information to the UK government, industry and the public.

She said that the depth of the Powys earthquake reached 5 kilometers and its magnitude reached 2.7 mm (Richter scale).

“Felt in Rhayader. If you live in and around the Llanbister area and felt the earthquake this morning, you can help BGS scientists by filling out our felt report questionnaire,” BGS said in a post on its Facebook page.

On average, the BGS detects several hundred earthquakes each year, but almost all of them are too faint for humans to feel. Those that are felt generally cause very little damage.

The Powys earthquake is the second largest earthquake recorded in the UK by the BGS in the past two months – after a 3.33M earthquake at Popeil, in Perth and Kinross, Scotland, which was recorded on 16 April.
