A minor earthquake was recorded off the coast of Haida Gwaii on Tuesday afternoon, and was lightly felt in several communities.

The Canadian Earthquake Authority said the earthquake occurred around 1:35 p.m. Pacific time at a depth of about 10 kilometers, and had a magnitude of 4.0.

The Canadian Earthquake Service said the quake occurred about 31 kilometers from Dagging Geds, a community on the southern tip of Graham Island.

Residents took to community Facebook pages to report the quake, with some feeling a “thump” or slight shaking, while others only heard a rumble, but did not feel it at all.

“I felt the rumble and the sound and I thought it was someone playing a trick, like running up the stairs too fast and smashing their feet,” Sandspit resident Robin Buttell told CBC News.

“It was very loud. Then I noticed that everything was kind of shaking. I looked behind me because I thought maybe someone was there.”

Boutelle said she and her co-worker were on a video call with their manager, who told them their faces were shaking on the screen.

There were no reports of damage, and no tsunami was expected, the Canadian Earthquake Service said.

Tuesday’s quake came after a 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Haida Gwaii island, about 52 kilometers from Daging Gedes, on Sunday. Both earthquakes were felt by Botel.

“I was lying there silently with my dogs, so there’s no music or anything, and I have an old house, and it’s kind of rustic,” she said.

She added: “I was on the second floor, and I felt like someone took me and shook me.”

The agency says earthquakes with a magnitude between 3.5 and 5.4 are felt often, but they rarely cause damage.

“I hope we don’t receive any more, and I don’t want a tsunami,” Botel said.
