Two 3.0+ earthquakes have occurred in Colorado in recent days

In recent days, some Coloradans may have felt the ground shaking beneath their feet (or bed). According to the USGS, two earthquakes of at least a magnitude of 3.0 have occurred locally this month, one on May 16 and one on May 18.

The first incident occurred about seven miles southeast of Stonewall Gap, Colorado, which is located just north of the state’s border with New Mexico in southern Colorado. This earthquake had a magnitude of 3.1 and occurred around 7:04 p.m

Two days later, a magnitude 3.0 earthquake occurred two miles southwest of Walsenburg at approximately 6:30 a.m. on May 18. With this earthquake being closer to a population center, it was likely felt by those who were awake at the time. It is also worth noting that this earthquake was preceded by another magnitude 2.3 earthquake around 11:46 PM the night before, and this earthquake was located about four miles southwest of Walsenburg.

A magnitude of 3.0 is considered notable, as this is close to the threshold at which people begin to feel an earthquake. However, the damage doesn’t really happen that big, and if it does, it’s minor.

A third, stronger quake occurred outside Colorado earlier this month as well, just south of Colorado and in New Mexico. This earthquake had a magnitude of 4.0 and occurred about 11 miles southwest of Weston, Colorado on May 7 at approximately 11:44 AM.

A total of seven earthquakes have been recorded in Colorado over the past 30 days, according to the USGS, in addition to the quake just south of the state line in New Mexico. All other earthquakes over the past 30 days have been below magnitude 3.0, and minor quakes of this type are quite normal for the state.

According to EarthquakeTrack.com, the largest earthquake to occur in Colorado in recent decades was a 5.4-magnitude quake in the town of Parachute in Garfield County in 1973. That strength was rivaled by another more recent quake, a 5.3-magnitude one in the Trinidad area of ​​southern Colorado in 2011.

However, some sources indicate that the strongest earthquake recorded in Colorado actually occurred in November of 1882, when it measured 6.5 to 6.6 magnitude. This occurred in the Fort Collins area up to Estes Park, and was also likely felt along much of the Front Range.

To help put these numbers in perspective, many of the world’s strongest earthquakes have a magnitude greater than 8.0, and sometimes higher than 9.0. According to reports from Michigan Tech, millions of earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or less occur around the world each year, with about 500,000 earthquakes of magnitude between 2.5 and 5.4 occurring. There is a sharp decline when it comes to anything stronger than that – about 350 with a magnitude of 5.5 to 6.0, about 100 with a magnitude of 6.1 to 6.9, about 10 to 15 with a magnitude of 7.0 to 7.9, and one earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 or greater every year or two.

The strongest earthquake to occur in the United States in the past 30 days was a 5.2 magnitude earthquake near Silver Springs, Nevada, on May 1.
