Denmark was hit by an earthquake at 4:14 pm on Wednesday, measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale, according to the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland.

GEUS said the epicenter of the quake was in Coogee Bay, south of Copenhagen. Foreign organizations pinpointed the epicenter far west, off Peverskov.

Several residents in the ACT and elsewhere in New Zealand reported feeling strong tremors on Wednesday afternoon.

The house shook, and the doors rattled

One of them was Anne Sitsky de Boer, who lived in Allerslev, in Léger. My first thought was that someone was unloading firewood when at 4:14pm I felt the entire house shake.

“I felt like my house was about to collapse. The house shook and the doors rattled,” says Anne Sitsky de Boer.

She lives about 20 kilometers from the supposed epicenter.

This was not the first time Anne Sitsky de Boer had been hit by an earthquake. It also felt the earthquake that struck Scone in 2008.

The 2008 earthquake was the largest ever measured in or around Denmark, measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale. The next largest earthquakes were the 1985 magnitude 4.7 earthquake that struck the sea floor north of Gelili in northern New Zealand, and the 1954 magnitude 4.6 earthquake that struck southwest of Thisted in northern Jutland.

The last larger earthquake was in 2012. It measured 4.3 on the Richter scale and occurred in the middle of the Kattegat region.

It can be felt on Funen

According to geophysicist Bo Holm Jacobsen of Aarhus University, Wednesday’s earthquake was what is called a fault rupture. He said it involved a small underground breach, between 100 meters and a kilometer long, near the epicenter in the area around Kogi.

“This earthquake was clearly moderate, and for most people it would feel like a heavy truck passing by. If it had happened in Greece or Turkey, people would have shrugged their shoulders and said to each other, “There was another one,” said Bo Holm Jacobsen, associate professor emeritus in the Department of Earth Sciences.

Although the earthquake was small by international standards, it could be felt in several places in Denmark and Sweden. Several media outlets reported that the earthquake was felt in Sjællands Odde, Funen and Malmö.

Copenhagen’s emergency services received so many calls on Wednesday afternoon that they asked people to only call if they had urgent problems.

Bo Holm Jacobsen said the quake may have caused minor damage, but he expected the effects to be very limited.

»If your house is about to develop a crack, it’s likely that this earthquake made the crack visible. But it could be just as easy, because you felt the vibration, you look closely and then notice a crack that was already there,” he says.
