Public Health Awards
Today at the World Health Assembly, six laureates from around the world received awards for their outstanding contribution to public health. The 2026 awards celebrate the extraordinary commitment of these professionals and institutions to improving primary health care, reducing inequalities and bringing health for all closer to reality.
The awards were presented by the President of the Assembly, Dr. Víctor Elias Atallah Lajam from the Dominican Republic, together with senior representatives of the foundations that established these public health awards and prizes, and the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Delegates approved the decision on the state of emergency in Ukraine
The delegates of the Assembly stated today that a report of the director general regarding the humanitarian and emergency health response in Ukraine and WHO’s continued support to the emergency health response in the country.
While considering the report, the delegates accepted a decision calling for continued implementation of existing resolution WHA75.11 on the health emergency in Ukraine with a progress report to be submitted to the World Health Assembly in 2027.
The Assembly emphasizes an integrated response to NCDs and mental health
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health conditions remain the leading causes of disease and premature death globally, driven by a combination of social, commercial and environmental factors. However, many health systems remain fragmented and underequipped to manage multimorbidity, aging populations and widening inequalities.
At a WHO strategic roundtable, ministers, policy makers, partners and practitioners explored how systems can better respond to evolving challenges.
Participants emphasized the need to move beyond disease-specific approaches to integrated people-centered systems that address risk factors, strengthen social connections, and engage communities. They also highlighted financing and fiscal policy – including taxation, incentives and reforms – as key tools to address risk factors and broader health determinants.
The debate follows the 2025 Political Declarations on NCDs and Mental Health, which renewed global commitments to coordinated, multisectoral action in prevention, treatment and care.
