A magnitude 6.0 earthquake hits the Big Island of Hawaii, damaging homes

Researchers at UC San Diego simulated a 6.9 magnitude earthquake to see if this 10-story building would maintain its integrity.

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Hawaii on the night of May 22 local time, and was felt across the islands, with reports of damage to homes and downed power lines, officials said.

The quake occurred at 9:46 p.m. local time, or 3:46 a.m. ET, about 8 miles from Honaunau-Napopo on the Big Island, according to the US Geological Survey. Residents felt strong tremors in the western part of Hawaii Island, known as the Big Island. The US Tsunami Warning System said there was no tsunami threat.

Hawaii County Mayor Kimo Alameda said several rockslides occurred as a result of the quake, and road crews were working to remove debris overnight. The slides have been reported along Highway 11 from Captain Cook to Ocean View, he said. He added that there were also reports of downed utility lines and power outages, and reports of damage to homes and other buildings. He added that minor damage was also reported at Kona Hospital, but services were not disrupted.

The US Geological Survey said several aftershocks have already occurred in the area, including a 4.0 magnitude tremor. More are expected in the coming days.

The US Geological Survey said more than 2,400 people reported feeling shaking within a few hours of the main quake.

Thousands of earthquakes occur every year in Hawaii, most of them too small to be felt, due to volcanic activity or the weight of islands pressing on the underlying crust. Over the past 50 years, 36 other earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 5.0 have occurred within 60 miles of the epicenter of the May 22 quake, according to the USGS.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the latest earthquake was not directly caused by volcanic activity. It was caused by the pressure resulting from the weight of the Hawaiian Islands chain, which led to the bending of the oceanic plate below.

“The earthquake had no apparent impact on the Mauna Loa or Kilauea volcanoes,” the observatory said.
