A violent tremor from a 6.0 magnitude earthquake destroys homes on the island of Hawaii, raising concern among residents

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Residents across Hawaii Island are continuing cleanup efforts after a 6.0 magnitude earthquake Friday night caused damage to homes, moved structures off their foundations and shook communities across the state.

A video sent to Hawaii News Now captured the violent shaking inside Randy’s Huli Chicken and Ribs, with shelves crashing to the ground as people scrambled for safety.

“It was a big surprise, and then it was like a bomb went off,” store owner Randy Morris said.

Morris said his warehouse sustained only minor damage, but his daughter’s home suffered major structural damage after the quake blew the house off its foundation.

“I felt like I was on one of those carnival rides that like to shake your body,” said homeowner Asia Morris Selsley. “It looked like the whole house exploded.”

As the tremor intensified, Maurice Selsley said her main concern was getting her children out safely.

“My mom tried to get me out of bed,” said Janoa Sisley, Maurice Sisley’s son. “I fell into a crack in the deck and my legs slipped through it.”

“The roof split in half,” Maurice Selsley said. “The house is on the ground. He jumped off the foundation.”

Other residents also reported damage caused by the force of the quake, including fallen water tanks, cracked floors, and altered property.

“The entire tank fell and hit the house and was dumping water,” said Jacob, a resident of Hawaii Island.

Visitors staying on the island also described being surprised by the shaking.

“I came here for my birthday party, and it already started with a bang,” said Tina, a tourist from Sacramento, California.

Back on Oahu, some residents reported feeling light shaking and windows shaking, although conditions were much less dangerous than on Hawaii Island.

As families continue to recover from the quake, Hawaii County officials say damage assessments are continuing as crews respond to additional reports from across the island.
