Residents of Hawaii Island reported damage from a 6.0 magnitude earthquake

The 6.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked the Hawaiian Islands on Friday night caused power outages, extensive damage to homes and rockslides that temporarily closed roads in South Kona, where the quake’s epicenter was located.

No injuries were reported but Hawaii County officials received reports Saturday from the Civil Defense Agency that at least 28 homes were damaged, including a post and dock house in South Kona that collapsed and is considered unlivable because of extensive damage to its foundations, said Tom Callis, a spokesman for the city’s sheriff’s office.

The American Red Cross helps the tenants who live there.

A number of Hawaii Island residents reported seeing their homes shake during what was called the Honaunau-Napopu earthquake, as cabinet doors opened and vases, ornaments, picture frames and other items crashed to the floor.

Hawaii Island resident Randy Morris said his daughter’s house on the pier in Kauhi, South Kona, also fell off its foundation when the quake struck at 9:46 p.m. The house next door moved about 3 feet, he said.

Morris’s daughter’s house was built by family members and was completed just three months ago. Asia Morris-Celsi, her husband, Cody, and their two young children, Jahnua, 6, and Jahvia, 4, are staying with Morris for now, and the family has set up a GoFundMe page to help them rebuild.

Don’t miss what’s happening!

Morris, a retired police officer and owner of Randy’s Huli Chicken and Ribs in Hilo, was inside his warehouse when the shaking began, causing a few bottles to fall to the floor and “a mess while cleaning up.”

“It felt like a bomb went off,” he said.

County officials urged residents and business owners across the island to report any damage in order to secure federal funding for assistance. Residents are also advised to contact their insurance provider and document any damage.

“This earthquake was widely felt across Hawaii Island, and we encourage anyone who may have been affected to check their homes and businesses for damage, including utilities,” Mayor Kimo Alameda said in a news release. “Our Civil Defense staff are waiting to receive your reports and our crews will conduct on-site assessments to collect more data.

“Remember to stay safe, stay connected, and use all necessary caution when inspecting your property, especially around gas and electrical lines.”

About 1,000 customers were without power during the quake, which also caused rockslides along Highway 11, Napopo Road and Miloli Road that temporarily closed roads, Hawaiian Electric said. County crews cleared debris, rocks and boulders — some up to 5 feet in diameter — and reopened all roads by 6 a.m. Saturday.

According to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the epicenter of Friday’s quake was 7 miles south of Honaunau and Napupo and at a depth of 14 miles below sea level. It had no apparent impact on Mauna Loa or Kilauea volcanoes, and no tsunami was generated.

The Croatian Defense Council said aftershocks could last for days and even weeks, but are likely to diminish. There were 21 aftershocks of magnitude 1.5 or greater as of Saturday afternoon, and five aftershocks of magnitude 2.5 to 4.0.

More than 2,600 people from as far away as Kauai and Oahu took the “Did You Feel It?” survey. Of the US Geological Survey. An online survey collects information from those who felt the earthquake and creates maps showing what people suffered and the extent of the damage.

Friday’s event is not related to the thousands of volcanic earthquakes occurring in Hawaii and is directly related to magma moving within Hawaii Island’s volcanoes or erupting at peaks or rift zones, geologist and HVO spokesperson Katie Mulliken said.

She said it has to do with tectonic faults in the Earth’s crust and upper mantle, and specifically, the weight of the Hawaiian Islands on the tectonic plate on which they lie.

Such earthquakes, which occur “deep in the islands, are the ones that are most widely felt throughout the Hawaiian island chain,” Mulliken explained. “Because it occurs in the Pacific plate, it travels more efficiently than the Kilauea earthquake that occurs on the volcanic edifice, which is why these earthquakes are not felt more widely.”

The last earthquake to use the same type of mechanism was the 6.7-magnitude quake in 2006 at Kiholu Bay in North Kona, which was widely felt along the island chain and damaged structures on Hawaii Island and Maui.

Mulliken said there is no way to predict such earthquakes.

Volcanic-related earthquakes, such as the powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake on the south side of Kilauea in 2018, involve the movement of magma or volcanic eruptions.

“Volcanoes often give us signals that they will erupt, but earthquakes can happen at any time,” she said.
