On Monday, a 3.2-magnitude earthquake struck parts of the Southern California coast

The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred yesterday at 8:12 p.m.

The epicenter was about 5 miles southeast of Malibu and 11 miles west-southwest of Santa Monica, and the earthquake was about 7.5 miles deep.

The strength of this earthquake was not uncommon. Although thousands of earthquakes occur annually in California, most are practically imperceptible. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a few hundred have a magnitude of 3.0, with approximately 15 to 20 per year having a magnitude of 4.0 or higher.

The California Department of Public Health’s Office of Emergency Preparedness lists general guidelines on what to do in the event of an earthquake.

If people are indoors, they should get down to the ground and take cover under a table or piece of furniture and hold on. If furniture is not easily accessible, CDPH advises people to cover their heads and crouch in a sturdy, load-bearing doorway or in an interior corner of a building.
