BREAKING: Two people were shot and wounded during an encounter with the Secret Service near the White House on Saturday, a law enforcement official said. The incident happened near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 17th Street Northwest. A law enforcement official said agents from the uniformed division of the Secret Service were responding to a report of a person firing a weapon when the incident occurred. CNN reporters heard what appeared to be dozens of gunshots near the White House, prompting a lockdown and a quick response from the US Secret Service. The Secret Service said the agency was investigating reports of shots fired at the corner of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, which is outside the White House complex. Members of the North Lawn press corps were ushered into the White House briefing room. Inside the White House, where reporters were told to stay put, Secret Service agents shouted “get down” and warned of “gunshots.” Secret Service agents with rifles were seen moving around the North Lawn after the incident and blocking off the White House press conference room. The lockdown was lifted just before 6:45pm ET. President Donald Trump is in the White House.
