A poll predicts a possible political earthquake

California Post poll results are in, predicting a potential political earthquake in the June 2 primary.

In the race for mayor of Los Angeles, attorney Spencer Pratt, an advocate for fire victims, leads Karen Bass, 30.1% to 29.5%.

This is within the poll’s margin of error of 4.9%. And Bass wins among those who have already voted.

But among likely voters who have not yet cast a ballot, Pratt leads by 5%.

(Socialist Nithya Raman is third overall, with 23.4%, a long way from the lead.)

Furthermore, 62% of respondents say Los Angeles is on the wrong track. Only 25% say it is on the right track.

Angelenos are hungry for change. Maybe they’ll give Pratt a chance.

Pratt has the support of 87% of Republicans in opinion polls. But he also has the support of a majority of independents, leading Bass by 34 points, 52% to 18%. (Raman has 15%.)

Prat also leads among Latinos with 33% to PAS’s 24% and Raman’s 21%. He also has a large number of Asian and white voters. (Bass has two-thirds of the black vote.)

Democrats are split between Bass (40%) and Raman (32%). They will get back together in the fall.

But the fact that Bass is unable to win a majority within her party suggests that she is a weak candidate.

If Pratt runs the general election against Bass, and reaches out to Democrats — especially Raman’s supporters — he may be able to build a winning coalition.

In the governor’s race, a California Post poll also showed that Xavier Becerra may no longer be the front-runner.

Republican Steve Hilton shares the lead with Democratic billionaire Tom Steyer, with 24.7%.

Becerra comes in third with 18.7%, suggesting voters may be recalculating.

The race is still in flux, with only a few days left before Election Day.

But one thing is clear: Californians are frustrated with the status quo.

Only 29% say that the country is on the right path, while 56% say that it is on the wrong path.

Current Gov. Gavin Newsom is underwater, albeit within the margin of error: 50% disapprove of the job he is doing, while only 49% approve.

(Not good for running for president.)

The first issue for voters: the cost of living by 23%. Affordable housing came in second place, at 10%.

These are topics that candidates must address — regardless of who succeeds after Tuesday.
