They say removing the three existing tanks and replacing them with one will help the community recover faster in the event of an earthquake.

Medford Water is scheduled to begin replacing three aging tanks with a 12-million-gallon tank.

MEDFORD, OR – Medford Water is replacing three aging reservoirs with a new facility designed to withstand earthquakes and help the community recover faster after a natural disaster.

NewsWatch 12 spoke with Medford Water, who said the current tanks are about 100 years old. The old infrastructure was not built to any seismic standards.

“Those older facilities were not built to any seismic standard at all. They didn’t exist at that time,” said Andy Hoffman, Medford Water’s project manager. “So this new facility has been designed and is being built to modern and current seismic standards, and this will benefit the community in the event of a natural disaster, specifically earthquakes.”

MEDFORD, OR – The City of Medford is replacing its three aging reservoirs on Capital Hill with a larger, modern reservoir designed to withstand earthquakes.

The reservoirs, which have been in use for nearly 100 years, store drinking water from Big Butte Springs before it flows to other areas. According to the city, the project is key to providing the backbone of an earthquake-resistant water system that will help the community quickly recover from natural disasters and continue to serve the growing region.

The new reservoir will be built at the same location off Capital Avenue in East Medford. The facility is located at one of the highest points in the city, which helps distribute water efficiently to the entire system by gravity.

The project will be implemented in phases so that the water from Capital Hill never stops flowing. Initial investigation work began in December 2022.

Construction is expected to begin in July or August 2026. The city said it designed the project not only to protect the water supply, but to be good neighbors in the community.

The property is bordered by homes located on Valley View Drive to the west, Ridge Way to the north, and Modoc Avenue, Brentwood Drive, and Girard Drive to the east.
