The community says the meteor caused a boom heard throughout Massachusetts
The explosion that rocked Massachusetts and other Northeastern states Saturday afternoon was caused by a 3-foot-wide meteorite that entered the atmosphere near the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border, the American Meteor Society said. Several witnesses shared a video of the sudden explosion. It was all recorded at approximately 2:11 p.m. Around the same time, NOAA’s GOES-19 satellite lightning chart shows a burst over the Massachusetts coast. Robert Lunsford, a Fireball program monitor with the association, told The Associated Press that the group has received dozens of reports from Delaware to Montreal with people who heard a double bang, felt the ground shaking or saw a fireball — which he said looked like a shooting star in the daytime sky. Lunsford said it was unlikely the meteorite hit Earth. Before confirmation from the American Meteor Society, StormTeam 5 said it was possible that a meteorite existed,” said AJ Burnett of 5. “But the data suggests that this may be a very real possibility. I don’t think this was an earthquake.” WATCH: Cameras across Massachusetts record a loud boom at 2:11 p.m. on May 30. Viewers shared similar experiences with WCVB, thinking a tree hit their house or a transformer exploded. “…The entire house shook, in fact all the houses in the neighborhood. “It was much louder than a transformer explosion, and definitely not an earthquake,” one viewer from Melrose wrote. Another viewer wrote: “We live in Wellesley and just heard what sounded like an explosion about 10 minutes ago. We understand it was felt in many areas.” Another viewer said: “We heard it in Newtonville and it was enough to make the dog angry and make me think a big tree had fallen due to the wind.” The Massachusetts Office of Public Safety and Security said it also received reports of audible booms and earthquakes in eastern Massachusetts. “Although we do not yet know the cause, there are no known emergency police or fire calls associated with these reports and we do not believe there is any threat to public safety,” they posted. “We remain in touch with our local, state, and federal partners to monitor any impact and understand the cause as it becomes available.” WCVB has reached out to state officials, the Weston Observatory and the USGS for more information.
They were all recorded at approximately 2:11 p.m
At about the same time, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) GOES-19 satellite geostationary lightning pattern shows a burst over the Massachusetts coast.
Robert Lunsford, the community’s Fireball program monitor, told The Associated Press that the group has received dozens of reports from Delaware to Montreal where people heard a double boom, felt the ground shaking or saw a fireball — which he said looked like a shooting star in the daytime sky.
“It was definitely larger than a regular fireball, about a yard wide,” he said.
Lunsford said it was unlikely the meteorite would hit Earth.
Before confirmation from the American Meteor Society, StormTeam 5 said a meteorite was possible.
“The theory now, and we don’t know for sure, is this could be an exploding meteorite entering the atmosphere. That’s kind of what we’re investigating right now. We don’t know for sure,” said StormTeam 5’s AJ Burnett. “But the data suggests this may be a very real possibility. I don’t think this was an earthquake.”

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
