Strong earthquake hits North Queensland residents

Residents in northern Queensland were hit by earthquakes, their second this year.

The magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck around 1 pm EST, about 100 km south of the Charters Towers, according to Geoscience Australia.

The earthquake, which is about 10 kilometers deep, has caused no damage so far, with people reporting shaking windows about 200 kilometers away in Townsville.

Geoscience Australia received more than 300 reports in 45 minutes from people claiming to have felt the Earth move, according to The Brisbane Times.

Spiro Sibeliopoulos, an Australian seismologist, told the newspaper that people reported “tremors” and “rattles”.

No damage was reported due to the quake.

The region was also hit by a 4.9-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Bowen in April.
